LIVING ROOTS OF MEGHALAYA

Deep amidst the dense wet forests of Cherrapunjee, lie the oldest living root bridges of the world. Dating back to the 1800s, the history of who actually started building them is yet a story to be dymystified.

With the amount of rainfall that Cherrapunjee receives, it is impossible to sustain the wooden bridges. To abet this, for centuries, the Khasis and Jaintias (local tribes) have trained the Ficus Elastica trees to merge with Areca Nut tree trunks. Each such root bridge takes about 15 years to grow strong. The tenacity of these structures is a natural wonder.
Not just saving the tribes from the menacing rains, the root bridges are constructed such that, the clean streams are not polluted by passers-by. The roots give the forests all the more reason to stay preserved.

Scientifically, root bridges have contributed to allotting spaces for trees to strengthen their roots and maintain a symbiotic relationship between man and nature.
Mawlynnong - Considered the cleanest village in Asia where the locals have taken the initiative to make it an eco-friendly zone. Also, it deviates away from the patriarchal norm, the surname of the mother is taken forward by the child.
